We start in the hamlet of Upper Mayfield.
After passing Tom Moore’s cottage we turn right down the hill.
At the bottom is Hanging Bridge over the River Dove.
We cross the river and take the first footpath on our left.
Follow the path until you reach the raised embankment.
The path turns right along this embankment.
After the gate bear left across the field.
The path follows a brook.
It then goes diagonally across the meadow. Go through the hedge and follow the path across the grass. It goes into a small wood and then emerges on a drive. Turn right, down the drive, and cross the road. The path goes across the field. We arrive in Ashbourne near the entrance to St Oswald’s.
Leave St Oswald’s and pass the old Grammar School. We also pass the house where Samuel Johnson stayed. We turn right at the traffic lights, just before the wooden arch. Cross the Henmore Brook. At the traffic lights junction turn left. The junction is in sight of HLL’s chapel which is on the right. Pass the birth place of Catherine Booth. Turn left at the lights and follow the road to the park. Go into the park and cross to the far corner, where there is a bust of Catherine Booth. Leave the park and on the opposite side of the road is Ashbourne Hall. Turn left towards the town centre. Go straight ahead at the junction. The junction has Erasmus Darwin’s daughters’ school on the left and then right into the market square.
Take the local road behind the George and Dragon. Go up the hill and cross the open junction towards Mappleton. Go downhill and turn right to join the Tissington Trail. Follow the trail northwards, and after a dip in the trail take the left footpath. The path goes to Callow Top caravan park. Follow the path through the park. The path then goes downhill. Take the right path diagonally across the fields. Arrive in Mappleton near the Okeover Arms. Turn right on the road and then turn left. Cross the bridge and the old mill is on the right. Okeover Hall can be seen across the estate.
Take the path across Okeover Hall estate. Join the lane and follow it across the cattle grid. Take the second path on the right. It crosses a field in the direction of a farm. Pass close to the farm and follow the path. The path is now parallel to the lane that we have just left. The path goes through a small wooded area. It then emerges onto the main road. Cross the road and take the side road opposite. Turn left at the crossroads in Upper Mayfield.
